Vanessa’s Concert

20091205177Vanessa’s concert was on last Saturday. We arrived rather early for the concert. There were only three other cars in the car park, some of which might probably belong to the teachers or other staff of the church or child care centre. I was beginning to feel like a super-kiasu parent, although it wasn’t that we planned to be. It is probably good to get Vanessa to the child care centre early so that we could make her up, and give her some time to settle down. We didn’t realize that her concert item wasn’t till like another 2 hours later.

The child care centre had put up the photos on display for parents to browse and order. The photos were very pricey. In fact, I think it is almost like a ripoff. These are photos taken during their concert rehearsal. It’s not as if they were professional orchestrated studio shots. They charge $2.50 per 4R piece, and $28 for a thumb drive if you want a soft copy. You can’t supply them your own thumb drive. Luckily it’s not as if we really had too many photos we needed. Vanessa looked very grouchy in the photos. I think she was getting tired and bored with the concert.

In fact, when she came on stage during the actual performance on concert day, she looked equally grouchy. Almost everyone else on stage had some kind of expression, be it happy, excited, scared, curious, etc. But Vanessa was just giving a stoned look. As she stood there while the teachers were readying everyone, Vanessa glanced around the floor and saw me. I was near to the front to take some photos of her. Her face immediately lighted up, and she turned to her friend standing next to her, pointed to me, and said something. I could not hear here, but I can make out her lips saying something like, probably, “there my papa!” Then she was smiling so sweetly. Wah, I was so happy… 🙂

I seem to recall my parents telling me I did something like that too, during my kindergarten concert. How funny to see it happening again.

I had imagined the concert to be over quite quickly. But I was quite wrong. Apparently the older kids had lots of performances lined up. In fact, the same class (i.e. the same kids) would come up on stage more than once, and each time could even be more than one item. So, by the time it was Vanessa’s turn, it was like 2 hours into the concert. We didn’t stay to the end… because we had to shuttle Vanessa off to another class.

The concert made me feel like we’ve grown a little older again, and I could just imagine the kindergarten graduation coming up, primary school graduation, etc.
