My Greatest Achievement this ICT

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

240620093203This ICT I achieved something. It is not something very spectacular or terribly significant. But as we try to spend the long hours as fruitfully as possible, this is nevertheless something notable, at least on a personal level. What’s that? Well, there is this flight simulation arcade game in the spec mess, I cleared the Intermediate Level.

New SAF New Balance Shoes

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

180620093130I’m surprising myself by writing something about SAF PT shoes. But the new SAF New Balance shoes are pretty good, so it is something worthwhile to write about. It looks quite unique (in a good sense), and the mesh material that covers most of the shoes make the shoes very airy and comfortable to wear.

Will Google Adsense Pay My Salary

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

photo-26I’ve been earning a small little sum of pocket money through Google Adsense on my blog. It’s a relatively steady flow, although also relatively small. The amount of work I put into my blog is also relatively little, of course, compared to my full time day job. I was just thinking about it, it I make blogging my full time job, would I earn enough from Google Adsense to pay me comparably to what I earn now from my day job?

Camera Phone Photography Skills

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

310520092993Good photography skills are not so easy to come by. That’s why you have professional photographers. To get a good photo, you probably need both good photographic equipment and good photography skills. Professional photographers have their professional camera rig. But how about camera phone photographers? I think camera phone photography requires even more skills!

Annual Necessary Evil for Singaporean Men

Friday, June 12th, 2009

photo-15There is a certain even that is an annual necessary evil for Singaporean men. At least almost year, and for many Singaporean men. It’s reservist service, or In-Camp Training. Some like it, don’t like it, but almost everyone has lots to complain about it. In fact, it is so strange that even those who are not serving are part of the complaining lot.

Upgrading to WordPress 2.8

Friday, June 12th, 2009

photo-21WordPress version 2.8 has been released. I decided to revisit the issue of automatic core updates which had not been working for me previously. The automatic update simply means that you can upgrade the core WordPress software through the admin interface (i.e. through the web browser), without having to manually download the archive file, upload to the WordPress hosting server, etc.

Delicious Orin Apple

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

310520092987A few weeks back, the University Health and Wellness Centre at NUS organized another of its Fruits and Vegetables Day. It’s quite a popular event that sees very good participation from many NUS staff. The highlight of the event is basically that they distribute free fruits. This year, we got apples and persimmons. The apple was really good. I had several of it: I got one more by playing one of the games, and helped myself to a few more offered by some colleagues who managed to get an extra bag full of apples.

$3000 Vacuum Cleaner

Monday, May 18th, 2009

170520092921I could never have imagined buying a $3000 vacuum cleaner. But we just did over the weekend. It is awfully expensive, but after seeing what it does, I think many people would be convinced they need one like it. I suppose their marketing strategy is really effective. They make you feel really bad about not having one, so that you need to buy one right away. They are certainly pretty good at helping to guide you along toward the “buy” decision.

Preparing for H1N1 Pandemic

Monday, May 4th, 2009

photo-26The SARS experience is repeating itself, this time in the form of the new H1N1 flu virus. Organizations like my workplace will do the “right thing” to implement all sorts of measures now, like what had been adopted for SARS, even though the risk at this point to people in Singapore is really quite minimal. But I suppose they cannot ignore the fact that the risk exists.

Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

photo-15One of my favourite products of IETF, the internet protocol standards body, is their publication of the Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol (HTCPCP) in RFC 2324. As a coffee drinker, I was quite intrigued about the idea of using the Internet to manage coffee brewing. HTCPCP is a protocol for managing devices capable of brewing the all-time popular caffeinated hot beverage. HTCPCP is important, because computer geeks, and indeed Internet addicts, are heavily dependent on this rejuvenating beverage.
