My Take on Nokia N97

I still haven’t got time to write a long-winded review of the Nokia N97, but since people are starting to ask me for comments, I think I’ll just share my thoughts of the phone in here. I’m going to make a couple of comparisons with the Nokia N95 8GB, since that is the previous phone I used before switching to the N97. If you’re switching from the N95 8GB too, this would be good reading for you.

NUS People Happy to Pay $4 for Lunch

I think the owners of the Indonesian Panggang stall at the NUS Engineering Canteen have put to practice some good business tips. How can one maximize profits? You may be charging your customers $3 now. But if your customers are happy to pay $4, why not ask them for $4? It’s very clever.

Software Upgrade Disables Functionality

Software upgrading is one of those common chores that many computer users have grown accustomed to. It’s something you need to do from time to time, because it fixes bugs, plugs security holes, adds new features, etc. The upgrade it usually something good. So, it is quite frustrating (at least to affected users) when some upgrades are designed to break something.

Fuel Economy Labeling in Singapore

While waiting for my car the other day, I looked around the Kah Motor showroom and noticed the new fuel economy label stuck on the windscreens of all the cars. It’s the Mandatory Fuel Economy Labeling programme introduced by our National Environment Agency not too long ago, requiring all vehicles to undergo fuel economy testing, so that buyers can be better informed about the environmental impact of the vehicles they choose to drive.

Visit to Kah Motor

I’m here at Kah Motor again. It’s not actually the regular servicing, but rather a follow-up on a problem complaint because they failed to address it during the regular servicing appointment scheduled last week. There was something wrong with the door handle. The service advisor wasn’t listening, and fixed the wrong thing (which I had no complaint about). Car servicing is actually rather a hassle. Even if they provide shuttle rides to the MRT station, it doesn’t really make that…

SCADA Security Talk

This would be my first visit to Nanyang Polytechnic. I was there for the SCADA Security and Controls event organized by (ISC)2 and AiSP. The venue was pretty nice. I think I would have loved my JC to have been like this. The polytechnic seems to be quite serious about the H1N1 precautionary controls, with smart card readers, infra camera scanners, automatic sticker dispensers, etc. The seminar itself, however, was a little disappointing.

N97 vs N95 8GB Camera Images

Both the new flagship Nokia N97 and the previous flagship N95 8GB boast the same specifications 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss lens. Apart from the fact that the former has dual LED flash while the latter only has a single LED flash, how do the resulting still camera photos from the two phones compare? Could there be some slight differences in the optics, or in the software producing the JPEG image output? Well, I’ve put them to the…

WordPress Blogging from Nokia N97

One of the things I missed in the Nokia N97 is Lifeblog. It is a Nokia application that enabled me to post directly to my WordPress blog directly from my phone. I was doing this on my N95 8GB previously. However, it seems like there’s no more Lifeblog in the N97. It had apparently been dropped since the S60 3rd Edition FP2 software. Fortunately, I learnt that there is a solution.

False Fire Alarm Again

All the false fire alarms at my home are getting very irritating. They were happening quite frequently at one time, then it got better (i.e. less frequent), then lately, they started to pick up in frequency again. This evening, it rang again, and it lasted for quite a while, because the security guards could not silence or reset the fire alarm system.
