As with most air travel to any distant destination, the first day is essentially spent on the plane or in the airport. So that’s basically how we spent day zero on our holiday trip to Hawaii. The flying time itself probably totaled not a lot more than 12 hours, but including the transit time, the early check-in at Changi Airport, it all adds up pretty quickly.

MacDonalds Ice Cream
Just a simple MacDonald’s vanilla ice cream cone will make her really happy. There’s the more expensive Island Creamery next door, but Vanessa’s not really interested. Given the choice, she chose to go to MacDonald. Then in MacDonald, there are a variety of other ice cream choices like the sundaes or McFlurry. But all Vanessa wants is the simple 70 cent vanilla ice cream cone. Save the parents a lot of money huh.
Lunch at Casa Verde
Lunch time came, during my whole day meeting at NUS Bukit Timah Campus recently, and everyone was thinking about where to eat. We were told Black Angus was closed (surprising isn’t it?), and we didn’t fancy BK’s version of Black Angus. So I suggested Casa Verde, a place I’ve come to visit from time to time ever since my wife suggested the place for breakfast a long time ago. It’s a restaurant at the Singapore Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre.
Visit to Bukit Timah Campus
I recently visited the NUS Bukit Timah Campus. I was there for a whole day meeting. As I walked around in between breaks, I saw the beautiful internal courtyard. This one in the photo is what they call the Upper Quadrangle. It was a picture like it was somewhere else other than in Singapore. Big open space, surrounded by oldish buildings, with absolutely nothing else visible on the skyline. There aren’t many tall buildings in that area, so that isn’t…
Laptop of the Future
The coolest laptop of the future… take a peek at it. It’s a conceptual presentation. Technology will make everything (well, almost) possible, given time. So while it may seem farfetched at this point in time, it is not too difficult to imagine that it will happen in the not too distant future. In fact, there is nothing terribly revolutionary about it, at least technologically speaking.
Gambling at MacDonalds
If you think students hogging tables to study at fast food places is bad, this is worse: Students hogging tables to play cards. I suppose you don’t call it gambling if money doesn’t change hands, but many places just outright ban playing cards too simply because they consider it equivalent to gambling. Of all places, this is happening at MacDonalds.
Feng Sheng Hainanese Chicken Rice
There are these two Hainanese Chicken Rice stalls at the Dover Food Centre, just separated by one stall in-between them, that have been pretty well known and are typically quite crowded. Yes, both of them, in the past. But some time ago, when I was there and patronized the corner stall, I was sorely disappointed with the quality of the serving, apart from also not being told in advance that they had run out of the century egg.
M1 vs StarHub iPhone Competition
M1 and StarHub have officially announced the launch of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S. Sales will commence on Wednesday 9 December 2009. The prices of the phones as well as the specially priced phone subscription plans have also been announced. Prices are remarkably different from those of SingTel. There is also some differentiation between M1 and StarHub.
Vanessa’s Concert
Vanessa’s concert was on last Saturday. We arrived rather early for the concert. There were only three other cars in the car park, some of which might probably belong to the teachers or other staff of the church or child care centre. I was beginning to feel like a super-kiasu parent, although it wasn’t that we planned to be. It is probably good to get Vanessa to the child care centre early so that we could make her up, and…
