Mac OS X Snow Leopard and other Updates

The cat is out of the bag. The latest version of Apple’s Mac OS X operating system, code named Snow Leopard, will be launched in September. Current Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) users can upgrade to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) for just US$29. That seems like a very reasonable upgrade price to pay.

Variable Pricing at iTunes

Just as Apple had said at MacWorld, variable pricing for music sold at the iTunes store has started. What used to be a flat rate US$0.99 per song, is now spread across three price tiers at US$1.29, US$0.99, and US$0.69. Economically this makes sense, but I’m sure many customers would rather just continue to have the US$0.99 flat rate because, obviously, now all the popular songs are going to cost more.

Nano-Chromatism

The 4th generation iPod Nano was launched in 9 colours. I used to think that 9 colours was too many colours. You don’t find notebooks (of the same model) in more than a handful of colours. Even car models are often not available in as many as 9 colours. Having 9 colours of iPod Nanos was a causing a problem: What colours to choose? Well I found out if you’re going to offer choices, then you can never have enough…

The Cheapest iPod Nano Deal

Yes, I’ve fallen to the “dark side” and acquired an iPod Nano this week. I got a pretty good deal, paying about S$292 for the 16GB model. I’ve been doing some research, and even waited out till the IT Show last week to see what deals there would be. But unfortunately, Apple is quite sticky about fixing their prices. So all IT Show had to offer was freebies, not a cheaper iPod. How did I get my iPod?

My Best Computer Mouse Ever

The batteries on my Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse finally died, and it suddenly set me thinking about how well it has served me. I’ve used computer mice for almost as long as they existed. Through the years I’ve had used and owned many mice, including variants like trackballs. Some are pleasant to use and others horrible. But the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse, which I acquired in mid 2008, was absolutely the best of all of them. It’s amazing how much…

Apple’s New iPod Shuffle Surprises

No matter how earnest the stalkers are in tracking down new products, updates and other announcements from Apple, sometimes they fail. Once a while, Apple manages to pull out a surprise. Today, the surprise is the new iPod Shuffle, an even smaller version than the previous generation iPod Shuffle. It is only 10.7g in weight, about as light as some of the lightest bluetooth earpieces. It comes in 4GB capacities, holding up to 1000 songs.

Apple Updates Three Macs

The Apple Store has just reopened with three new Macs: the new Mac Mini, the new iMac and the new Mac Pro. Actually there are more new things: the new Time Capsule and the new Airport Express. They’re not all ready for immediate shipping in Singapore, but soon enough in just a couple of days (or a little longer, depending on what product you’re looking for).

The Mac’s 25th Anniversary

I’m surprised there isn’t any fanfare. But apparently, Apple’s flagship product Macintosh celebrates its 25th anniversary today. The Macintosh brought to the market a user-friendly GUI. It wasn’t the first. It wasn’t even Apple’s first (Apple launched the overpriced Lisa a year before the Macintosh). But the Macintosh was made for the mass-market, captured the attention of consumers, and stood the test of time.

Apple’s Red Wednesday Sale

Just like they have the Black Friday sales in the US and other countries, we will get our Red Wednesday sale. It is a one-day sale event at the Apple Online Store taking place on 14 January 2009. Unlike in the US, the sale does not extend to Apple resellers, and since there are no physical Apple retail stores in Singapore, you’ll have to do your shopping online. Discounts are usually quite attractive. I understand from a colleague that even…

Apple Announcements From Macworld 2009

Macworld 2009 is underway right now. This will be the last Macworld for Apple, and Philip Schiller took Steve Jobs’ place to give Apple’s keynote at the event. Apple had three product announcements: iLife ’09, iWork ’09 and the new aluminum unibody 17″ MacBook Pro. Nothing revolutionary like the iPhone of 2007 or MacBook Air of 2008. These are mainly evolutionary product updates.
