Running CCNA2

We just ran a CCNA2 (Routing Protocols and Concepts) class last week. It’s our second run, and CCNA2 is the second of four courses designed to prepare candidates to sit for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) examination. It’s a small class, so it was quite easy to manage. But at the same time, it was quite tiring, partly because as the instructor, I had to go through all the topics myself to make sure I was familiar with the…

Test Your Skills at Outdoing SingTel and StarHub

Cisco recently made available an interesting simulation game called myPlanNet. If you’ve played SimCity, as I’m sure most people are familiar with, you’d find some of the concepts similar. In myPlanNet, you are the CEO of a service provider, and what you do is to manage your business as it evolves through the different eras from primitive dial-up, through broadband and mobile connectivity, into the futuristic (although certainly not farfetched) medianet age.

10 Gigabit Ethernet Line Cards

The 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) standard was ratified in 2002, but we finally only got around to installing our first 10GE interface last year. This year, we have another big bunch of 10GE links interconnecting a big bunch of our switches. 10GE still costs a bomb. The Cisco 16-port 10GE line card lists for something like S$80K. The New Operating System

Virtualization is not new to me. I’m now using a variety of virtualization platforms like VMware Server, Linux KVM and Xen. VirtualBox has become the most recent platform that I’m exploring, and that started some time last year. But it’s only now that I’ve got Windows XP running beautifully in VirtualBox hosted on Mac OS X and Linux platforms that my excitement in desktop virtualization has been renewed. Having 4GB of RAM on my MacBook helps a lot too.

Cisco Career Certifications

We just started running the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) courses in our new Cisco Networking Academy programme. CCNA is just one of the many Cisco Career Certifications which are quite valued in the workforce. It’s quite a helpful piece of paper for fresh graduates to better market themselves when they look for their first job. Definitely more valuable than certifications like MCSE, although of course the certifications are not about the same things.

Cisco Live at Universal Studios Florida

This year’s Cisco Live customer appreciation event was held at Universal Studios Florida and the Hard Rock Cafe. Cisco Live guests had exclusive access to Universal Studios rides and shows, and there was free flow of food and drinks at kiosks and food outlets throughout the park. There were quite a number of performances too: Blue Man Group, Bare Naked Ladies, etc. There was a whole lot of fun.
