Web-based Counter Strike Like Game

Zit SengIt isn’t Counter Strike itself. But it is a pretty good first-person-shooter (FPS) type game. Sure there are many other FPS games around. But this one is a web-based game! Just this alone makes it so impressive that you’ve got to check it out. Yes, no kidding, this FPS plays right out of your web browser. I was so amazed.

I found this game by chance. I was trying to get hold of some widget to add to my Apple Dashboard. I chanced upon a free Paradise Paintball widget. I don’t play much of games, and I haven’t been playing FPS games for many years. But a FPS widget? That was interesting. So I downloaded to try it out.

It was already impressive as a widget. Then I thought, why not try installing the application? Surely a game so good would have a full application installation. So I headed over to the Cmune.com, the company that makes Paradise Paintball. Yes, there are buttons for Mac and Windows. Click on Mac, lo and behold… the game launched in my Safari browser. Sure it took a little while to load, but once it loaded, there the same FPS game played right out of my browser. Full sound. Fluid graphics. Beautiful scenery. Realistic physics. Totally impressive.

The Windows button also leads to a browser based game. There’s also a Facebook button. I haven’t tried that, but I imagine it plays out of your Facebook account in a browser window too. Awesome.

What’s more? It’s a networked FPS game! Yes, that means you can join a game and duel with other human players. Yes, I rallied a few colleagues to try out the game. Everyone was so impressed. (Although getting everyone to be free at the same time even for a few minutes to have a network game proved impossible.)

The game is free. I guessed, and it turned out to be the case after exploring the company website a little, that Paradise Paintball is a technology demo on what the company is capable of delivering, so that their customers will be convinced to pay them to do other work.

A web-based FPS game! That impressed me the most.
