I normally would just settle for cheap, though functional, USB Type-C cables. However, when you’re at the airport and realise too late you need grab some extra IT gadgets, the pricey stuffs at the airport shops will have to do. That’s how I ended up with this Mazer USB-C to USB-C cable.
For the record, I did not forget to bring by USB-C to USB-C cable. What I forgot was to bring an extra cable. In a previous trip, the sole USB-C to USB-C cable, which had always been working fine (and still is), somehow inexplicably failed to work on just one of the nights. After that, I decided that I must bring more than one cable.
With the limited choices at Changi Airport Terminal 1’s transit area, I ended up with this Mazer USB-C to USB-C cable from Sprint-Class. It was a pricey S$18.60. That price isn’t in a out-of-this-world category. However, one surely wants to know how much value this cable offers.
The Mazer USB-C to USB-C cable does look like a very well made premium quality cable. At the core, this Alu.Dura.Tek cable has 1.2 metre length and supports USB Power Delivery fast-charging with up to 3.1 Ampere current (about 60 Watt power).
The tough woven nylon braided jacketed cable has reinforced termination with gold-plated USB Type-C connectors and aluminium housings. The 1.2 metre cable length is terminated with gold-plated USB Type-C connectors and aluminium housings. Internally, the cable has a TPE jacket, protective mesh, and aluminium foil shielding surrounding the actual signal cables which have a bulletproof reinforced fibre core.
The takeaway about that cable is that it is tough. It can withstand 35 kg of pulling force (I’m not sure if that includes pulling at the connectors), and survive 12 hours in salt water without tarnishing. It’s also flexible, capable of taking 35,000 rounds of 180° cable bends.
Apart from charging, you can also use this Mazer USB-C to USB-C cable for data sync at up to USB 3.1 Gen 1 speeds. There’s no Thunderbolt 3 support.
This cable is probably the toughest USB-C cable I’ve ever owned. Mazer is confident enough that they offer a 5-year warranty on this cable. I don’t know if I’ll want to pay S$18.60 for a USB-C cable, but if I specifically wanted something ultra-durable, I would consider this Mazer USB-C to USB-C cable. If it helps, the included velcro cable tie is nice too.
