Today, Singapore celebrates its 50th National Day. This will arguably be the largest, most extravagant, celebration in Singapore’s history. On the one hand, the government has a multi-million dollar budget to pour into this extravaganza. At the same time, countless companies and private organisations are piggy-backing on the festivities, particularly on the official government-led SG50 branding.
Singapore has achieved much in the last 50 years, and Singaporeans should have every reason to be proud. Nationalism is on overdrive this year. We know why, but never mind that, because today we celebrate fifty years of nation building, with joy, pride, and thanks.
For people around the world, mention the song Home, and they’ll think of Michael Buble. Singaporeans have our own song, composed by Dick Lee and popularly performed by Kit Chan.
This is home truly, where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me, where the river always flows
This is home surely, as my senses tell me
This is where I won’t be alone, for this is where I know it’s home
Happy birthday, Singapore! May we continue to achieve happiness, prosperity, and progress for our nation!
