USB Type-C has made it possible to connect a sort of multi-port docking device to a notebook with just one single cable. I’ve been looking forward to get one ever since my late-2016 MacBook Pro, and this Vinpok multi-port hub fits the bill.
This Vinpok’s device is officially known as “HUB, 7-In-1 Multi Port Device”. It’s not the best or most descriptive name. It is USB Type-C, or USB-C, most assuredly, something I thought should be quite importantly reflected in the product name.
Unlike the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock I reviewed recently, this Vinpok dock is not Thunderbolt 3. However, even just supporting USB 3.0 over a Type-C connection, the Vinpok offers the important functionalities that most people need, namely:
- Dual USB 3.0 (more accurately 3.1 gen1) Type-A ports, with 5 Gbps speed and 5V/0.9A power
- HDMI video output up to 4K resolution (3840×2160 @ 30 Hz)
- RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port
- Full-sized SD card slot
- Micro-SD card slot
- USB Type-C PD 2.0
The Vinpok USB-C dock is well designed. It is made out of aluminium alloy, with an anodic oxidation process that helps form a hard protective coat to product the surface from corrosion and scratch. I’m quite impressed with the build quality considering the price point of this product. There are no rough edges.
Instead of a boring slab, Vinpok has designed this USB-C dock with some subtle curves and contours to give it a distinct profile. It is available in only one colour, space grey, and it will match nicely both the space grey and silver MacBook Pro.
This isn’t just a USB-C dock for MacBook computers. It will work just as well as Windows notebooks that have USB Type-C ports. I’ve tested this with several notebooks like the Lenovo Yoga 730.
I’ve used the Vinpok USB-C dock with USB Type-C power bricks of various types, and have no trouble with USB-C PD pass-through to both my MacBook Pro and Windows notebooks.
The Vinpok HUB, 7-In-1 Multi Port Device is available from Vinpok’s online store. You’ll usually see it listed at US$49.99, but I’ve seen it discounted down to US$39.99 often enough, with free shipping. Be warned, though, that shipping takes a few weeks.
Conclusion
The Vinpok USB-C dock works as a convenient docking station for new MacBook Pro computers and any Windows notebook with a USB Type-C port.
Pros:
- USB Type-C with PD
- HDMI with 4K support
Cons:
- No VGA
