I had expected a small increase. There were new features, particularly the built-in EVF and new lens. Maybe S$1099 would be right. At S$1199, however, this very expensive compact point-and-shoot camera has gotten even pricier.
Check my RX100 III post last week for a quick rundown on the new camera. At the end, I concluded that the RX100 II can still hold its own beside the RX100 III. The price of the RX100 II has already been marked down to S$899. This means that the RX100 III is going to command a S$300 premium over is previous generation model.
Just to recap, the S$300 buys you:
- Pop-up OLED EVF
- New (35mm equivalent) 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens
- 1080p @ 60fps video with full sensors readout and 50 Mbps XAVC S support
- Upgraded flip-up LCD screen that flips a full 180 degrees
If all those features matter to you, then consider if the S$1199 price point works for you.
Otherwise, I think the RX100 II is still a pretty awesome camera.
Sony Days 2014 is running now, until 29 June 2014.
