Failing Nasi Lemak Standards

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

We were going to be at Lucky Plaza this morning, and I was looking forward to the Nasi Lemak there. It was the famed River Valley Nasi Lemak located in the basement of Lucky Plaza. It has been there for quite some time actually, and I’ve eaten there several times previously. It was quite good. But it seems standards have dropped tremendously since. The rice wasn’t fragrant. The egg was dry and hard. The chicken was tough. The fish was was tasteless. There was not enough ikan bilis (the peanuts were plentiful but the ikan bilis were a rarity). Even the chilli wasn’t nice either.

Today’s Special – Warm Sushi

Friday, March 5th, 2010

It’s Sakae Sushi’s latest special. At least at the outlet in Junction 8. Warm Sushi. We dropped by this evening for dinner and were surprised by their new sushi servings. First it was one plate that we plucked off the conveyor belt. Our teeth felt a warm sensation as they sank themselves into the sushi. Hmm. The second plate we plucked off the conveyor belt had the same warmness. We weren’t the least pleased with the new sushi. I wonder, had the sushi been going around the conveyor belt since lunch time?

Oyster Indulgence

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I think we had 11 oysters each, from The Line restaurant at Shangri-la Hotel. It’s a big buffet with plenty of food.

North Indian Pakistani Food

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I was at the famed ABC market and food centre recently for lunch. There’s quite a lot of good food to pick from in there. When we found an empty table to sit at, I noticed this stall whose signage says they serve North Indian Pakistani Food. Sounds interesting. It seems they are a branch of the Al-Musafir Restaurant located at Kitchener Road. I’ve not not of them either, actually, but it makes them sound “good”. They sell Briyani, one of my favourite, so I decided to order that.

Free Beer at Ma Maison

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

We haven’t come to this restaurant for some time, so we were quite pleasantly surprised that they have remained quite the same as before. Same ambience, the same food, same pricing, and about the same promotions too. It’s a quiet little Japanese fusion restaurant situated in a corner of the 2nd level of Bugis Junction, but they can get quite crowded. Service is good and the staff are friendly.

Hawaii Day Three – The Cheesecake Factory

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

20091220134The highlight on day three is about food. We headed over to Waikiki beach again, where they had this restaurant called The Cheesecake Factory. I thought it was a factory that made cheese or cheesecakes, where you could go to tour, sample their products, and maybe they had a little cafe somewhere you could sit down to have tea or coffee with some snacks. I was quite mistaken. I was wondering what the fuss was about having to go their on an empty stomach. It turns out it’s really a restaurant where, among other food, they serve a great variety of cheesecake.

Lunch at Casa Verde

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

20091210284Lunch time came, during my whole day meeting at NUS Bukit Timah Campus recently, and everyone was thinking about where to eat. We were told Black Angus was closed (surprising isn’t it?), and we didn’t fancy BK’s version of Black Angus. So I suggested Casa Verde, a place I’ve come to visit from time to time ever since my wife suggested the place for breakfast a long time ago. It’s a restaurant at the Singapore Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre.

Feng Sheng Hainanese Chicken Rice

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

20091208260There are these two Hainanese Chicken Rice stalls at the Dover Food Centre, just separated by one stall in-between them, that have been pretty well known and are typically quite crowded. Yes, both of them, in the past. But some time ago, when I was there and patronized the corner stall, I was sorely disappointed with the quality of the serving, apart from also not being told in advance that they had run out of the century egg.

Domino’s Pizza Singapore is Back

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

141120091623I thought they’ve all but disappeared from Singapore, but they just opened an outlet not too far from where I stay, in a shophouse along Chun Tin Road. They describe themselves as “the world’s no. 1 pizza delivery company”, and “the pizza delivery experts”. They deliver in 30 minutes too! They are all about pizza delivery, not about the pizza themselves. It struck me as a little unusual that they are focusing on the delivery experience when they aren’t a courier service like DHL or Fedex.

Astons Specialties

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

081120091558We were recently at Astons Specialties for lunch. This is the branch at Cathay. We were there at about 12:30pm on a Sunday, and there was a moderately long queue formed up outside the restaurant. I was slightly surprised, because I didn’t consider Cathay to be such a frequented area. But anyhow, we didn’t have to queue very long, because a big group left and a lot of tables were freed up.
