Boomz and Shingz

Friday, October 30th, 2009

301020091469I’m surprised how much momentum Ris Low’s brand of English has gained in such a short period of time. I can imagine there will be lots of talk around town about Boomz and Shingz. It’s on TV, it’s on radio, it’s on the Internet in various forms. Then, what did I see? Boomz, at a shop. Oh. A series of clothing based on Ris Low’s English.

Lardy Food from a Hospital

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

061020091203Look at the large pieces of fried lard, and they were plentiful. This is from a hospital. No, it’s not the hospital’s catering for their patients, but the food served in the canteen. Still, you’d have thought that the canteen would have been more health-conscious. I guess the stall operators don’t care. If customers want lardy food, they’ll serve lardy food.

The Vision of Jackie Chan Fighting Virii

Friday, October 16th, 2009

131020091258This was another guest lecture I attended this week. It’s the boss of the company who engaged Jackie Chan to fight virii for its TV commercial we’ve been seeing on our TV screens. Yes, Eugene Kaspersky. The title of his talk? Check it out in the photo on left. Eugene shared his vision for a secure Internet. He’s idealistic. But I suppose visions can be idealistic. Unfortunately, the steps to achieve that vision were also unrealistic. But then again, I suppose it is alright to dream. Like how Jackie Chan can fight virii.

Photo 18Today, and this time of day particularly, is one of those special moments in time where the day, month, year, hour and minute are all the same. It seems like a good time to post some rant at this auspicious minute. Yeah, I missed 08/08/08 08:08, but I’m sure this will do just as well. It will be a busy day (like any other day of course), but I’m sure I can find a few minutes to gripe about something.

Road Chaos on Campus

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

120220091835_2With the new school year just around the corner, there are now an increasing number of people on campus. Crowds in the canteens, crowds at the bus stops, and stupidity on the roads. Stress levels are going up, and my stress level just went up because of two near accidents in the span of 1 minute.

10-Year Series for PSC Interviews

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

25072009401I thought it was interesting to find in the newspapers today two half-pages of articles on the topic of PSC scholarship interviews, and advise for future interviewees on what they should and should not do. It seems like PSC scholarship interviews have become more serious matter than job interviews. Are they going to start publishing 10-year series of PSC scholarship interview questions someday? Along with recommended model answers?

What Can I Use My Samsung Voucher On?

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

photo-19When you register a Samsung product warranty, you get a nice 15% discount voucher to be used on purchases at Samsung’s flagship store at VivoCity. Sounds good huh. I bought a 40″ LCD TV, which comes with a free 26″ LCD TV, and when I register the warranty online, I get yet more discounts. Yup. The problem with the discount voucher is the terms and conditions attached to it.

SCADA Security Talk

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

10072009187This would be my first visit to Nanyang Polytechnic. I was there for the SCADA Security and Controls event organized by (ISC)2 and AiSP. The venue was pretty nice. I think I would have loved my JC to have been like this. The polytechnic seems to be quite serious about the H1N1 precautionary controls, with smart card readers, infra camera scanners, automatic sticker dispensers, etc. The seminar itself, however, was a little disappointing.

False Fire Alarm Again

Friday, July 10th, 2009

10072009200All the false fire alarms at my home are getting very irritating. They were happening quite frequently at one time, then it got better (i.e. less frequent), then lately, they started to pick up in frequency again. This evening, it rang again, and it lasted for quite a while, because the security guards could not silence or reset the fire alarm system.

Carelessness is Costly

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

08072009164A sign stuck on the tables at a NUS canteen reminds people that carelessness is costly. People are being reminded not to leave belongings unattended. Belongings such as wallets, bags, handphones and notebook computers. I thought to myself, it’s stupidity that is costly here. Why do people leave valuable belongings such as notebook computers unattended in NUS canteens?
