Baby Vanessa Updates
Sunday, September 30th, 2007[photopress:20070929451.jpg,thumb,pp_image]Baby Vanessa is now coming to 6 months old. A lot of things have been happening in the last 2 weeks or so. Her tooth has started to pop out. She has started to perfect her flipping-over skill. She has begun to learn about using her vocal chords and expressing herself through screams.
Having My Breakfast
Sunday, September 30th, 2007From iPhone to iBrick
Saturday, September 29th, 2007Apple has apparently made good on their threat to disable hacked iPhones (BBC News). Their latest iPhone software update has rendered the hacked or unlocked handsets inoperable. Depending on which hack was applied, some handsets may still be operable if fitted with an original AT&T SIM card (San Jose Mercury News, Brisbane Times). Although Apple has publicly said that they would not go out of their way to disable hacked handsets on purpose, this will definitely still remain as a big question in many people’s mind.
Internet sites are now rife with discussions on this software upgrade (or downgrade for those who ended up with an iBrick). One big issue is whether Apple was entitled to disable the hacked iPhones. Martin McKeay questions the legality of tying the iPhone to an AT&T contract. I am too far away from the US to be familiar with US laws, but I imagine there is no question about anti-competitive laws playing into this matter.
Jabra JX10 Ear Gels Fit Perfectly
Friday, September 28th, 2007[photopress:20070928450.jpg,thumb,pp_image]It turns out there are ear gels for the Jabra JX10 after all. I saw this blog post on Treonauts and decided I had to contact Jabra about the not-so-comfortable JX10 fit in my ear. They confirmed in their email reply the next day that ear gels were indeed available for the JX10 and directed me to the local distributor in Singapore. They also sent a picture of the ear gels: a pack of green, blue and black variety ear gels. Cool. The black ones would go nicely with my black JX10.
The Fuss with PC Power Supply Units (Cooler Master eXtreme Power)
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007[photopress:20070923365.jpg,thumb,pp_image]The power supply unit of my home desktop PC started to make some uncomfortable noises, or rather, it was the fan of the power supply unit that was making those noises. Most likely the fan was going to die. And then when it dies, the power supply would start to overheat… and since my home desktop actually functions as my 24×7 Internet server for my home, any downtime would be rather inconvenient. Ok, so I went out to get a new power supply.
It’s amazing how you can easily buy complete PC casing inclusive of power supply at under S$100. But buying the power supply on its own tends to set you back about S$100 too. So I started surveying more shops than I would usually do while getting things from Sim Lim Square. Oh of course, there were also S$35 power supplies, but they look really cheap and unreliable. I don’t mind paying slightly more for a reliable power supply.
Upgrade to WordPress 2.3
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007[photopress:ScreenShot001.png,thumb,pp_image]WordPress 2.3 has just been released a few hours ago, and I’ve got this site upgraded… during a break between meetings.
There was a glitch with SideBlog screwing up the front page, but an upgrade to a newer version that was available fixed it. There was also another glitch with the Nokia lifeblog API, due to the change in the underlying database schema for handling categories, but fortunately that was also easily fixed.
Jabra JX10
Monday, September 24th, 2007[photopress:20070923362.jpg,thumb,pp_image]After much hesitation and consideration, I finally got myself the Jabra JX10 bluetooth headset. The hesitation came about because while practically every review I’ve read on the Internet seems to say it is a great design, personally I didn’t particularly think so. I agree it isn’t bad looking at all, but I thought there were other more interesting looking models from, say, Plantronics. Most of the time the JX10s featured on the net are the original silver colour ones; The black ones (which I got) do look cooler, and the burgundy ones I subsequently discovered were also available are even nicer.
But anyhow, most reviews do agree that the JX10 is also excellent in function. Superb audio quality with great sound clarity (how you hear the other party, and how the other party hears you) and loud volume. The JX10 features a digital signal processor that automatically adjusts volume levels while reducing background noise, a good enough reason for people like me who need an explanation on why it’s better.
Rascal Wants Baby’s Food
Friday, September 21st, 2007[photopress:20070916268.jpg,thumb,pp_image]We have started Vanessa on some simple solids for some time now, including this biscuit you see in the photo which she enjoys (actually she seems to enjoy everything… lunging forward for my cup of cold water, licking off a piece of mooncake that was within her reach, etc).
Our poor dogs have started to take notice that Vanessa’s getting some treats that they aren’t. Here is Rascal with his “Please please I want one too, I’ve been a good boy…” look. Phoebe’s smarter. She is interested in the biscuit too, but she figured she’s not going to get it, so she didn’t bother after a while. Rascal on the other hand remains very hopeful.
But sorry to disappoint, Rascal, this is baby food, not dog food.
