Taking Security for Granted

The case of Jemaah Islamiyah leader Mas Selamat’s escape from Whitley Detention Centre is now all over the news. As efforts are underway to track down Mas Selamat and arrest him, this is also a timely reminder for us to ponder about our security. How did Mas Selamat escape? No, I’m not talking about pinning the blame on some scapegoat. But more about the grander scheme of things, the importance we place on security, actual implementation and practice, etc.

Tower Crane Crashed Down In NUS

A tower crane at the construction site of the new alumni house in NUS came crashing down this afternoon. It smashed through a walkway shelter and just missed a crowded bus stop and an internal shuttle bus. Three workers died in this accident. The place was crawling with police, campus security, reporters. Fire engines and ambulance were also dispatched to the site. Here’s another photo, taken from ground level, looking at the tip of the crane that smashed down a…

No Need to File Income Tax

The Tax man sent me an early letter this year. It read: “We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to benefit from our No Filing service.” (emphasis mine) My first reaction was that, wow, no need to pay tax this year! Like I had just struck lucky toto or something. Maybe the government was being kind after having accumulated too much surpluses, and meanwhile I’m not earning enough to keep up with inflation.

Where is the Paperless Office?

Yes, while most people do their spring cleaning before the Lunar New Year, I only just got around to clean up my office desk on the 12th day of the new year. Rearranged the PC, tidied up the cabling, etc. I don’t know how long the cleanliness will last. My desk does tend to get cluttered with lots of papers, files, gadgets, etc.

The $5 Giordano Sale

A $5 sale is a sure way to attract crowds of Singaporeans. I just just standing in front of this Giordano outlet at West Mall yesterday and saw this swamp of people flocking to the shop. They had just put up a $5 sign over a wagon of T-shirts. It was some sort of a one-hour special. In a span of about one minute, they drew the crowd pictured in the photo.

Breakfast by the Pool

We decided to have breakfast by the pool this morning. Sounds cool doesn’t it, we’re away on a nice vacation somewhere far away in the middle of nowhere. Haha. Well it’s just the common pool at our apartment. We don’t often do this actually. Breakfast was just fried rice made from last night’s left over dinner and iced milo.

Valentine’s Day Dinner

My wife and I originally planned to have our Valentine’s Day dinner on the 15th. But we unexpectedly ended up having dinner on the 14th anyway. We were at Paragon in the late afternoon of the 14th. Dinner time came, and we noted the restaurants weren’t all that crowded. Perhaps we were early. We stood at Fish & Co and wondered if perhaps all the tables were reserved. No! How odd. Okay, since the menu looked sufficiently apetizing enough, and…

The MacBook Air in Singapore

Yes, by now it must already be in Singapore shops, although I haven’t gone around looking. I did notice the “pre-order” link at the Apple Singapore Store has been removed, and the “2-3 weeks” delivery is now “8-10 business days”. Yeah, so they are now really shipping in volume and catching up with the back orders.

The N95 8GB, N82 and N96

The Nokia N95 8GB, N82 and N96 are all very similar to each other. It’s almost like they are the same phone packed into different shells. So feature-wise how are they different from each other? In my previous post, I mentioned that the main highlight of the N96 is its new DVB-H receiver capabilities and 16GB of internal flash memory.
