It’s not just about dinosaurs, but I think most people go there specifically for the dinosaur exhibits. I’m referring to the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) located in the National University of Singapore. If you’ve got kids crazy about dinosaurs, this should make for an interesting excursion for them.
There are, of course, so many other things are LKCNHM. The dinosaurs may be big, physically, but they are dwarfed by the variety of other plants and animals on display. There are apparently some 500,000 variety of specimens, organised into 20 experiential zones on two levels.
I was, honestly, quite awed by what else LKCNHM had to offer apart from the dinosaurs. There’s just so much to see, starting from the plants at the entrance, ending with the mammals at the exit.
There’s a heritage gallery on the mezzanine floor with more to see.
The star attraction for many people may be the three dinosaurs in the centre of the museum. These are 150-million year old diplodocid sauropod dinosaur skeletons. There’s an accompanying dinosaur light show that runs every half-hour, and lasting just a few minutes. It’s just a light show, don’t expect to see dancing dinosaurs.
I would have given a short tour around LKCNHM, but I think CheekieMonkie has already done an excellent job. Check out his blog post!
Unlike regular museums, there’s this thing you need to know before visiting LKCNHM. There are three visiting sessions each day. They start at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. It’s designed so that the museum won’t get overcrowded, ensuring that visitors are better spaced out through the day. You can stay as long as you like though. It’s not like you must leave before the next session begins. It’s advisable to buy tickets beforehand, via SISTIC. While you can buy onsite, you run the risk of being turned away because the session is full.
Entry fees are $16/$9 for Singapore resident adult/child, or $21/$13 for other adult/child. You can check LKCNHM visitor page for full details.
I’m quite surprised that my kids were really interested with all the exhibits, not just about the dinosaurs. We spent much longer time than I had imagined we would take. It looks like we’ll be back again another time!
