Firmware Update for Nokia N95 8GB

There’s a new update to the Nokia N95 8GB firmware — version 15.0.015. This is the 2nd update (i.e. 3rd firmware) since I acquired this phone in November 2008. I’m quite pleased that updates for SingTel branded phones become available quite quickly. (On my M1 branded Nokia N73 previously, I typically had to wait several weeks after the new firmware is announced.) I’m not totally sure yet what this firmware does, since I didn’t find any official Nokia changelog, but well… new firmware should always run-faster-and-crash-less-often. 🙂

According to All About Symbian, some apps run faster and are more responsive, access to the 8GB flash memory disk is quicker, bootup speed is 20% quicker, and some bugs should obviously have been squashed.

Flash Lite 3 and Flash Video is now fully supported, which means among other things that you can enjoy full YouTube access on the phone. There’s supposed to be a new (but old, considering that it was already there in the old N95) video editor, although I can’t figure out where it is. Nokia’s Web Run Time for their new widget platform is now added. These widgets look like S60 applications but they run on the web engine. Much like, perhaps, how applications are on Apple’s iPhone right now.

Incidentally, I used to have a problem that after firmware update (which would wipe out the phone’s data), and after restoring my backup, I’d still loose many settings. E.g. bookmarks, access points configuration. It seems like this problem is gone. Either it’s the new firmware, or the updates to the new Nseries PC Suite. Yes, even my alarms are restored back properly. However, my bluetooth pairings are still wiped out. Looks like I’d have to pair all my devices again.

Just for the record: 15.0.015 was supposedly released on 3rd Jan 2008, and was available for SingTel branded N95 8GB when I checked on 7th Jan 2008. Previous update to 11.0.026 was in November.
