The new iPhone 3G S announced at WWDC earlier this month will be available in Singapore, of course. Like the case with the iPhone 3G, SingTel will be the exclusive carrier for the iPhone 3G S. The iPhone 3G S is said to be available from July 2009. It will not be SIM-locked, so you could buy the iPhone 3G S from SingTel, then switch to a M1 or StarHub SIM card.
Considering that the iPhone 3G S price points remained the same as the iPhone 3G in the US (US$299 and US$199 for 32GB and 16GB versions respectively), there’s a good chance that the prices in Singapore will also remain the same. Personally, I’d think that SingTel might seize the opportunity to mark up with a little bit of premium. The Singapore prices for the iPhone 3G S has not yet been announced officially, so we’ll wait and see what happens.
July 2009 is not too long a wait. In fact, it is a shorter wait than the case with the launch of iPhone 3G. While the iPhone 3G was available to US customers and others in several other countries in June 2008, it became available only in Singapore in August 2008. For the iPhone 3G S, the availability in Singapore in July 2009 is only one month after it becomes available in the US.
The new iPhone 3.0 software will be available for download tomorrow (Singapore time). It is free for iPhone 3G users, but iPod Touch users will have to pay for the upgrade. Yes, the iPod Touch runs the same software as the iPhone. It’s funny that while the iPod Touch is like a broken iPhone, users of the former device actually have to fork out more money for its software.
StarHub iPhone-wannabe-reseller has still no luck with getting a deal with Apple on selling the iPhone.
