Nasi Lemak is one of the many favourite foods of Singaporeans. It’s one of mine too. The first photo here is of the Nasi Lemak from Old Town White Coffee. The ikan bilis is really nice and crunchy, and the fried chicken wing is nicely fried and juicy. Our baby Vanessa likes the cracker, the fried chicken wing, the rice and the ikan bilis (in roughly that order), so when I share the Nasi Lemak with her, I end up with not much left to eat, except perhaps for the sambal chilli.
Everyone seems to have different ideas of where to find the best Nasi Lemak. I don’t often get to travel to the far edges of Singapore. The one at Changi Village, for example, I probably had it only like once. So for most of the time, I just settle for anything that is above average. Old Town White Coffee would pass, so would Fong Seng (Pasir Panjang), and another one at Holland Village in a shop next to the famous Ipoh Hor Fun place (which has now upgraded to a full-service restaurant).
Recently some colleagues recommended and organized a lunch trip to the staff canteen at CSIT. For just $3.50, you get fried egg, fried chicken wing, ikan bilis, long bean and sotong. It seems quite value for money. It’s situated deep inside Science Park 2 though, so it is not terribly accessible. I think it also passes as above average. Not something strongly recommended to go out of your way to try. For people in NUS, well, this is something you could try considering that there is little Nasi Lemak offerings despite so many canteens on campus (I think only Engineering canteen sells Nasi Lemak).
The CSIT staff canteen sells this Nasi Lemak on Thursdays only though. It’s like their daily special. I’m not sure how often they revise their daily specials.
