Phoebe, the little girl mini-schnauzer, is very sneaky. This happened before CNY. We brought home a box of bak-gua. It was packed in the usual paper wrapping, inside a box, inside a plastic bag. It was placed on the floor, amongst other things, when we came home.
Some time later, while we were playing Warcraft I think, we heard some noises in the living room. My wifey went to check and to our horror (or rather, we were annoyed), found Phoebe chewing on a piece of bak-gua. There was also 2 other pieces of bak-gua strewn on the floor.
Now the bak-gua was packed in the usual paper wrap, stuffed inside a box, inside a plastic bag. I looked at where we left the bak-gua. The plastic bag was still there — intact. I peeked into the plastic bag, the box was still there in good form. I opened the box, and the paper wrap was torn off one corner. The naughty Phoebe had somehow sneakily helped herself to MY bak-gua without arousing much suspicion… without ripping off the plastic bag or the box. If not for the fact that she was caught red handed with a piece of MY bak-gua in her mouth, we wouldn’t have guessed what happened! Needless to say, Phoebe received a good whacking…
A few days later, we had a box of kueh lapis, packed in a box, in a plastic bag, on the floor. I heard some noises in the living room again. With the bak-gua incident still fresh in my mind, I thought “Must be naughty Phoebe again”. But hmm, OK, Phoebe was lying at my feet… so it was probably nothing to worry. I looked at her, she looked back, as if saying “no bak-gua here”.
But eh, the noises came again. So I got up and crept slowly to the living room. What did I find? Rascal had his nose inside the kueh lapis bag! I shouted “BAD DOG!” Rascal looked up and froze! Haha. He had begun to nibble at the box, but hadn’t reached the kueh lapis itself. (Funny how Phoebe could get into the box without destroying the box, yet Rascal had to nibble at the box.) Too bad for Rascal, he got caught before he could taste the kueh lapis!
The naughty dogs are so greedy! These were Chinese New Year goodies, for humans to eat; Not for dogs!
Incidentally the bak-gua were chilli bak-gua. So it seems Phoebe is fine with chilli.
