Sennheiser Redefines Excellence

I’m no audiophile, but I thought I know a little about high-end headphones. They are absolutely an indulgence in extremely luxury. They are so insanely priced. Oh wait, it seems there’s quite a lot more that I don’t know. Sennheiser just came along and redefined excellence. It’s price tag, astounding. I dare not even think about auditioning.

It’s the new HE 1060 / HEV 1060. Sennheiser calls it the best headphones in the world, and it had better be. It’s an electrostatic headphone system made to perfection with the most innovative technology, carefully selected, luxurious materials, and the highest quality of craftsmanship. This masterpiece will be handcrafted in Germany from next year onward, and about the price tag, let’s just leave it to the end.

I’ll just gloss over the technical parts of Sennheiser’s press release this week, except to mention that this headphone system comes with its own dedicated valve amplifier. Now, this amplifier itself is practically a thing of beauty in its own right. Think brass and chrome plated controls, a housing made of Carrara marble from Italy, and vacuum tubes enclosed in quartz glass.

There are apparently some 6,000 components, each meticulously chosen to support the acoustic excellence of the end product. Exclusive components such as gold-vaporised ceramic electrodes and platinum-vaporised diaphragms are used. The headphones themselves have ear cups finished in premium genuine leather.

Lastly, the price. Are you ready for it? It will cost around €50,000.
