Who’s To Bring iPhone To Singapore

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Me on my Powerbook G4

The big question with the iPhone in Singapore is which telco will win exclusive rights to sell the handset here? It has been anyone’s guess since the iPhone was launched in mid-2007, and all three of SingTel, MobileOne and StarHub at some point or other seemed to be the leading favourite.

The Story of Stuff

StoryOfStuff

This is an excellent 20 minute educational movie that exposes the environmental and social issues connected to the production of stuffs that we buy and consume everday in our lives. The 20 minute is fast paced and fact filled, and if you don’t learn anything new, it should at least be entertaining. Just feeling like doing my bit of social responsibility today. School Opens with Shopping Again

First pasar malam of the new term

The new school term has begun, and the Bazaars at the National University of Shopping are back again. It seems there are more stalls too. The LT27 foyer as pictured here, for example, hasn’t been so crowded in a while. The stalls still haven’t changed that much.

The MacBook Air

Apple logo on PowerBook

The most exciting Mac news this week has to be Apple’s new MacBook Air, currently the world’s thinest notebook. At the Macworld 2008 keynote address, Steve Jobs walked over to the podium, picked up a typical office manila envelope, opened it up, and pulled out the new MacBook Air in front of a completely awed audience. It was simply spectacular and stunning.

N95 Apps to Annoy Your Friends

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

NRC moving ball demoHere are some applications for your Nokia N95 to annoy the hell out of your friends with. Particularly those owning an Apple iPhone or the Sony Ericsson W380 (or upcoming Z555). iPhone owners are so smug about how their phone’s display changes orientation as they rotate the actual phone from portrait to landscape and vice versa. Well guess what? So can the N95 with rotateMe (review). It isn’t quite as smooth or slick as the iPhone’s, but still, show it to them. Then, show it to them again!

Apple iPhone vs Nokia N95 8GB

Nokia N95 8GB box

Yes I know the Apple iPhone has hit the streets over half a year ago (though not yet officially in Singapore). But it’s not too late to share my thoughts on how it stacks up against Nokia’s N95 8GB. It’s actually not too difficult to choose between the two. Do you want beauty, or do you want function?

Subsidized but Unbranded Phone

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

SingTel hello!I’ve just come to realize that, probably, the Nokia N95 8GB phone I bought from a SingTel hello! store recently is unbranded. Yes, subsidized by phone contract still, but unbranded. How cool is that, particularly since I don’t care for operator branding on my phone anyway. In Singapore, phones are not SIM-locked, but branding of the phones still introduces some problems.

Fire Suppression Gas Discharged

FM200 (HFC227) gas discharged

We witnessed the discharge of HFC227ea (FM200) fire suppression gas a few days ago! It was really a special and unique experience because few people ever get to witness the discharge of FM200 gas.

FM200 is a clean agent residue free fire suppression gas often used in data centres. FM200 gas, instead of water or other chemicals, is discharged into the room to extinguish a fire. The main advantages of FM200 is that it is safe to use around all types of electrical and electronics equipment, safe for humans, and leaves no residue after the gas has been discharged.
