$1 For A Night

Zit SengI originally put in a bid for $10 a night. I got it. In fact, it turned out that the bid was way higher than necessary. I was annoyed that my colleagues secured their one night with $8 and $1 bids. So, I went for another round and was successful with a $1 bid too. What are we bidding for? A one night room stay at the new Hotel Ibis in Singapore! Amazing eh. A hotel stay for just $1.

Oh, they charge 10% service charge and prevailing GST. Yeah. Insignificant on a $1 amount.

What is this about? Well, Hotel Ibis is running a promotion at http://paywhatyouwant.com.sg/ where you can bid for what you want to pay for one night stay at the hotel. I must say I’m rather intrigued by this promotion. This viral promotion is very effective: See how many colleagues and friends I’ve told about the promotion, and see how I am now blogging about it too. I’m quite impressed by the novelty of this promotion. Before this, I’m sure many people haven’t heard about Hotel Ibis in Singapore, much less about them being an international chain of budget tourist class hotels.

Sure, Hotel Ibis is not a glamorous top-of-the-class kind of hotel. But it still has some respectable standard, and it is spanking new. It’s right smack in the centre of town, at Bencoolen Street.

I was just joking about how my colleague, who will be staying one night before me, had better not mess up the room, because my $1 a night might not include housekeeping to clean up the mess! Hehe.

I will update about my experience at Hotel Ibis Singapore when the time comes!
