USB 3.0 HDMI Video Capture Adapter

There are several uses for HDMI video capture cards. Most of the time, it’s for recording video. Recently, I needed to view an HDMI video source inside my main computer display, a picture-in-picture mode if you will, and such an adapter would work for me too. Hence, I picked up this USB 3.0 HDMI video capture adapter from Lazada.

This is a basic no-frills HDMI video capture adapter. The Lazada product page lists the brand as “Vktech”, but I don’t see any brand mentioned on adapter itself, it’s packaging, or documentation. It’s made in China, where most other adapters are probably made too.

The adapter connects to the computer via a USB 3.0 Type-C interface, and they are kind enough to include a USB Type-A to Type-C adapter.

The adapter itself is pretty bare, safe for the necessary HDMI port and an LED indicator, There is also the inscription “USB 3.0 HD Capture” so you can be reminded of the function of this gadget, lest you mistake it for a video output adapter.

According to the specifications on the back of the box, this video capture adapter supports video capture resolutions up to Full HD 1920×1080 at 60 fps.

No drivers are required at all on both Windows 7 or later, and macOS 10.9 or later. Out-of-the-box, this adapter ought to work with software such as OBS Studio, Windows Media Encoder, Adobe Flash Media Live-Encoder, VLC, and others.

I only required real-time viewing, and for my purpose, even the Windows 10 Camera app was good enough. I’ve also tested this with OBS Studio on Windows 10, and the HDMI video was streamed perfectly.

This no-frills USB 3.0 HDMI video adapter works well, and costs far less than comparable devices on Amazon and elsewhere. If you need a cheap HDMI video recording gadget, or simply need to view HDMI picture-in-picture, check out this adapter. 1. I had checked out the product specs on Lazada website. My computer system hardware meets the requirements.

You mention software to use with the device such as OBS Studio, Windows Media Encoder, Adobe Flash Media Live-Encoder, VLC.

I am using Windows 7 pro and use VLC. Search the VLC menu I found the selection for open network stream, open capture device and Stream. Have you tried this device with VLC? To record to computer, I think I need to select open capture device. What is your take on it?

    1. That’s correct. You’ll find the this capture device “ezcap U3 capture” listed as one of the available video devices. Just leaving it to default also works for me because I have no other video sources available on my PC.
