Cod Fish Bento at Guild House

07092009927A colleague wanted to celebrate his birthday, so he treated a few of us to a meal at Cafe on the Ridge, a F&B outlet at the NUSS Guild House in Kent Ridge Campus. Usually I have the Nasi Goreng Kampung, but this time I decided to try their daily express set lunch promotion, which for that day, was a Japanese cod fish bento set. It’s pictured here, and it also comes with miso soup.

The set was only “so so”. I was disappointed that the rice used was just ordinary plain white rice, not Japanese rice. It seemed so out of place to be eating plain white rice in a Japanese bento set meal. The portion of cod fish was generous, but it was not good tasting enough to make it to a “recommended to try” status. Overall, considering that the set meal costs only about $10, I think there’s not too much I’d ask for. Except Japanese rice.

Another colleague had become somewhat disappointed with the Cafe on the Ridge offering. He noted that the Nasi Goreng Kampung seemed to be like the only thing they get right. I wouldn’t mind to try something new from time to time, but I think it does take some careful selection to avoid being disappointed.

While we were having our lunch, something the service staff were doing caught our attention. They were clearing away the dining tables on one side of the restaurant to setup the buffet line. They were even clearing tables right up next to a table that was still occupied by guests. I thought it was so odd that they were in such a hurry to prepare the dinner setting when lunch hour wasn’t even over. It’s like telling your lunch time guests: Move on, you had enough lunch time, back to work now!
