S.E.A. Aquarium

The latest additions to Resort Worlds Sentosa are the S.E.A. Aquarium and Adventure Cove, two attractions of the Marine Life Park. The S.E.A. Aquarium boasts to be the world’s largest oceanarium. They boast over 100,000 marine animals of some 800 species in 45 million litres of water. They also have the world’s largest viewing panel (36m wide x 8.3m high). It’s something that we need to visit.

Ian, my #2, was so awed by the aquarium at Ocean Park when we visited Hong Kong. So it seems even more apt that we’ve got to visit this S.E.A. Aquarium. The “S.E.A.”, incidentally, means South East Asia. So it seems that Resort Worlds Sentosa thought their Marine Live Park’s aquarium would be the aquarium of South East Asia.

Well, unfortunately, I’m not so easily awed. It’s a pretty good aquarium, plenty of exhibits, lots of things to learn about. It’s definitely better than what Underwater World used to offer at Sentosa. But it’s probably just about what any other decent aquarium ought to offer. We’re now comparing with world standards, so expectations are a lot higher.

The whole S.E.A. Aquarium is indoors, and air-conditioned. This is all so important in hot and humid Singapore. The main highlight seems to be their gigantic viewing panel, which they say is the world’s largest. It does look like the largest I’ve seen. It’s a great view of what goes on beneath the ocean, and you get a pretty good panoramic view of plenty of sea creatures swimming around in the vast space.

Apart from the aquarium itself, there is this side-exhibit called Typhoon Theatre. It’s basically a 4-D sort of multimedia experiential show, somewhat like Shrek 4-D. This one is about traveling on a Chinese junk, going through a storm, and then sinking to the bottom of the ocean. This show is included in the non-peak ticket price (S$29). During peak periods, you need to cough up another $10 for this show.

I think Adventure Cove could probably be a more unique experience. It’s more participatory in nature. However, if you prefer to observe marine life from arm’s length, S.E.A. Aquarium is for you.
