Singtel Free Data Day

_DSC9470It’s Singtel free data day today, for postpaid customers. This is Singtel’s compensation to postpaid customers for the data outage that occurred on 22nd April. Enjoy your free data. I’ve some suggestions on how you can use your data, but before that, here’s a reminder to make sure that your data charges will indeed be waived.

First of all, this is for Singtel postpaid customers only. Sorry, prepaid users are not included. I’m not sure why. It does not matter whether or not you are on a plan that includes data. If you do not have data bundled, then data on this day is free; if you do have data bundled in your plan, then your data usage on this day is not counted against your bundle.

Make sure that:

  1. Your APN is set to “e-ideas” for smartphone users, or “internet” for mobile broadband users.
  2. Reboot your device after midnight on 1st May, to be absolutely certain that your device starts a new mobile data session.

Check Singtel’s document page for more information.

What can you do on this free data day? Plenty. Here are some suggestions:

  • Try some Hangout video chats with family and friends.
  • Catch up on YouTube videos.
  • Live stream an event from your smartphone.
  • Setup mobile Wi-Fi hotspot service and connect your notebook to do plenty of surfing. You might even consider providing a free Wi-Fi hotspot to your neighbours, though I’d not advise this on the basis of security and responsibility concerns.
  • Run www.speedtest.net tests everywhere you go to test SingTel’s mobile data speeds around the island!

I had wanted to mention WhatsApp’s new voice call functions, but I audio traffic doesn’t add up to much data. You could still try out WhatsApp voice calls though, if the people you want to talk to don’t have Hangout.

Whatever you do, enjoy your May Day holiday and long weekend!

Disclaimer: I’m not responsible if you actually do end up incurring data charges.
