Beauty with Fonts

Screen Shot 2012-04-02 at 11.17.11 AM

I did not expect myself to be so passionate about fonts. I know that fonts can be beautiful. Using the right fonts can make a page full of text more pleasing, more inviting, and even easier to read. A beautiful website design requires much thought on the selection of fonts. Fonts, without a doubt, serve a very important function. So it is not surprising that I will spend time to choose the right fonts. What is surprising is that I…

Coca Cola Friendship Machine

20120329_162738

We have our own version of the Coca Cola Friendship Machine. If you’re around in the NUS area tomorrow, head over to the foyer area in front of LT14. Locate the Coca Cola vending machine, just like the one pictured here, give it a big hug (there’s a right way to do it), and it’ll dispense a free Coke. Yes, how cool is that? It isn’t quite the same thing as the other Coca Cola Friendship Machines. I’ve heard the…

What’s Wrong With Taxis in Singapore?

20120322_190409

I was flipping through our Land Transport Authority’s Land Transport Master Plan recently. A couple of statistics caught my attention. One of it is about taxis. According to the LTA, there are 5,129 taxis per million persons in Singapore. There are 2,642 taxis per million persons in Hong Kong. I’m extremely puzzled. In Hong Kong, if you accidentally wave your hand while standing at the road side, a taxi will very quickly pull up and stop next to you. Taxis…

Not $78K, But Now $82K For Right to Own Car

050320092065

It was $78K last month, and I thought it was already a ridiculous price to pay for that certificate of entitlement to own a car. The first bidding exercise this month saw a modest increase to $79K. But last evening, the results of the 2nd bidding exercise of March continues to see a significant increase in the Cat B COE prices. It’s now a cool $82,003 for Cat B, and $80,101 for the Cat E (open category). So now you…

Blog Integration With Facebook

2011-12-13 09.20.36

It hasn’t really been a long time since my last “state of my blog” update.  The last was when I wrote about WordPress 3.3, or if you don’t count that, then when I announced I had outsourced the hosting of this site. The last week, I’ve been on a roll – writing one post per day. It just happened that there were things to write last week. It’s not a posting rate that is sustainable now. Maybe, I could target…

Did you know you can get yourself a stack of Facebook business cards, free of charge? Oh well, you do have to pay for shipping, which is a reasonably nominal charge. The business cards are really free, no gimmicks, courtesy of Moo. You can order a box of 50 business cards from a convenient link on Facebook. Then you’re sent off to Moo’s website to customize your card, provide delivery details, and pay for the delivery. Moo’s offer for the…

Richard Stallman Speaks at NUS

20120313_180708

Richard Stallman, the man behind GNU and the Free Software Foundation, came down to NUS this afternoon to speak at the School of Computing about “Free Software and Your Freedom”. He was last here about 13 years ago. He’s still pretty much the same person now as he was then. That is, still excessively obstinate about his ideology of software freedom. I don’t quite subscribe to the same extremist ideas, but everyone is certainly entitled to their own beliefs. Times…

Tourist In My Own Country

20120311_112705

I’ve never actually set foot in the Sri Mariamman Temple. I was down at Pagoda Street this afternoon to attend a wedding, and I had a few minutes to wander around the area. The last time I was at Pagoda Street was probably like well over a decade ago. I think I was there at someone’s office for a LAN party. Something like that. I definitely wasn’t there to do what most people, i.e. tourists, go there to do. Technically,…

Richard Stallman’s Coming Around to NUS

SAM_0412

Richard Stallman will be at NUS next week, 13th and 14th March. He’ll be having a seminar/talk at School of Computing on the 13th, and at University Town on the 14th. He’s the man behind GNU and the Free Software Foundation, and I imagine a lot of students are going to be pretty excited to see this man. I’m not, I already had that moment some 13 years ago, in 1999, when he also come around to NUS and DSO,…
